Drive through Bluemont, Virginia, near the scenic Appalachian Trail, and you might spot a familiar, yet distinctively different, figure standing sentinel. Meet "The Stik," a formidable six-foot wooden statue paying homage to the legendary anonymous racing driver "The Stig" from the hit television show Top Gear. Carved from the stump of a massive tulip poplar, The Stik now stands proudly in front of Fast & Wily Racing, serving as both a local landmark and a symbol for passionate racers everywhere.
The Stik wasn't born in a factory; he was skillfully coaxed from wood by a chainsaw artist. He stands atop a four-foot base, the remnant of a majestic 70-foot tulip poplar tree that once grew on the property. The transformation from towering tree to iconic figure represents a unique blend of natural art and automotive passion, commissioned by Donna and Scott Luttrell, owners of Fast & Wily Racing. For Scott Luttrell, The Stik is more than just a clever roadside attraction inspired by a TV show. As a semi-professional sports car racer and former motorcycle racer with years of dedicated competition under his belt, he understands the drive and skill required, even when fame remains elusive. "There are so many incredibly talented drivers and riders out there, pouring their hearts and souls into racing, just like The Stig did anonymously on TV," explains Scott Luttrell. "They might not be household names, but their passion and dedication are immense.
The Stik is our tribute to all those unsung heroes of motorsport, the weekend warriors, the club racers, the skilled competitors who race for the love of it, often without the spotlight." The Stik's helmeted visage and racing suit, rendered in wood grain, embody this spirit of the dedicated, often unknown, competitor – a reflection of Scott and Donna Luttrell's own racing journey.
Located conveniently for locals and those exploring the nearby Appalachian Trail, The Stik has quickly become a point of interest, drawing smiles and photo opportunities. It stands as a unique welcome sign for Fast & Wily Racing. The statue reflects the precision, dedication, and passion for automobiles that drives the work inside the shop.
